HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
I The animal report of the New Plyj mouth Horticultural Society is as follows: — Your committee have to report a very successful year from a horticulturist's standpoint. Two shows were held —a rose exhibition in St. Mary's Hall and the Spring Show in the Theatre Royal. A cottage garden competition was also inaugurated by our chairman (Mr. iisch). The rose exhibition on November y was a great success as an exhibition, but the competitive classes were not filled quite .so well as d';<ireil The spring show was easily the best, in the arinais of the Society, the space irt the Theatre being fully taken up noth upstairs and downstairs, the flowers, vegetables and decorative work .ill being of a very high order. The cottage garden competition was rather disappointing, as far as entries \vero concerned, eight only having entered, but this was fully compensated for by the excellence of the gardens inspected. From a financial standpoint we cannot report the same success; but there annul ny reasons for this, and remedies can be prepared for the coming year. We started with a credit balance of £l2 4s Id, a loss on the year's wvking of £!) lis. Our principal increases are: Donations 3s, against £lO 13 last year; members' subscriptions £35 10s, against £3l; entry fees £ i'i <is Cd, against £ls 8s; and advertise-aents £.2 10s (< against £2. Our principal decreases are in door takings (two shows) £2!) 3s Od, against £3O ss; unclaimed prize money £1 4s, ag:u:ui CJ 12s; afternoon tea nil, against £2 His sd; j prize money £43 0s (id, ag.i'.ist £34 ■ 18s (id; advertising and print..ly i 23 ■Bs 2d, againts £l4 10s. The sc, ivtarrs salary shows a decrease, only .£io taken out of £l3 due, against £l2 iOs due and taken last yi-ar. The thanks oi the .Society are due to ail who lim.-mlly contributed money and value towards prizes, our judges, and perha:is more particularly to Messrs. Sandfonl and, McG'a.hey, who were most eii<-i'g.>tio at .both shows, both giving a great imonnt of labor and time. These remarks are in no way a disparagement to many other willing helpers"' among our c; mmittee, .the ladies showing a good example. Also, we have to tlia.iK the many people who offered exhibits only for exhibition at the rose and sprirg 1 shows. Among the numbers boiii? Mrs. Sandford. Mr. Sandford, Mrs. Ellerm, Messrs. Newton King, S. W. Slwv, S. Brooks, J. Weightmami, J. I. Laird, J. R.
