WAITARA HARBOR BOARD
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The adjourned ordinary monthly meeting of the Harbor Board took place on Friday evening, there being present: Messrs. Stuihbs (chairman), Foreman, Jenkins, iChappell and Spurdle. Several of the Board's lessees accept-] ed the conditions of the new leasing regulations, several new grazing leased. were signed by the Board, and a mort-j gage agreed to. I Mr. W. Proder wrote asking thej Board to withhold the resolution to reenter, requesting one month's delay,! when he'hoped to be able to take up the! lease again. Messrs. Watkins and Cox,! on behalf of a London company, asked i for boring rights options. The chairman thought it advisable t» defer the matter for a month, as' other companies were endeavoring to obtah. similar rights.—lt was eventually resolved to inform the applicants that the Board were unable to do anything in the matter, as the endowments were all
leased. I Messrs. Thos. Borthwick made a fur-i
ther offer of £65 per annum for a re-j newable lease of the sections at present! held by them. I Mr. Jenkins' suggested that the firm be' allowed a further twelve months to con-' sider the master, and moved that they be allowed time to accept or refuse the offer made by the Board. Mr. Spurdle seconded pro forma. '
The chairman moved that the Board accept £65 from Messrs. Borthwick per annum. He thought every consideration should be shown to the firm so as to ensure the retention of the freezing rbusiness. . | Mr. Jenkins though that the offer made by the Board was' most reasonable, the site being a valuable one, and it would be absolutely wrong to give away such a birthright at a nominal rental. ;
Mr. Foreman seconded the motion, aad in doing so thought that with the growth of Waitara there was a possibil-! ity that it would be found necessary to remove the works to some contiguous site, which would be an expensive mat-' ter to Messrs'. Borthwick. j
Mr. Chappell supported the amendment, which was carried. Mr. Jenkins called for a division, he being the only one to say no.
Messrs. Hatrick and Co. asked the Board to put up to auction a portion of the river bank near the railway line, and also the store now occupied by the Flour Millers' Association.
The chairman thought that as there was' a diversity of opinion as to what comprised foreshore, he moved that the Board obtain an opinion on the subject. The Board should do everything to foster the trade.of the port by facilities to those desirous of taking up leases.
Some discussion took place in regard to the desirability or otherwise of adding a second storey on to the present wool shed, or retain possession of the Flour Millers' Association ibuilding when the lease fell in.
It was resolved that the matter of ( leasing sites on the foreshore be referred to the' Works Committee to report on at next meeting, after deciding what the Board's-' requirements would be and ascertaining the position in regard to leasing. The Marine Department advised that a further effort would be made to sur-l vey the .reported shoal outside Waitara.l also in reference to the establishment of the Morse code of signalling for niMit work at Waitara. "
The chairing stated that the commanders of the Home boats had congratulated the oßard on tile establishment of the system, and the assisted yilot on his knowledge of the workings. The Harbors' Association forwarded"a specimen copy of conditions of contracts, and asking what number the Board would require.
A new draft of the proposed Bridge Rill was submitted by the Board's solicitor.—The. chairma-a moved his notice of motion deleting clause 3, dealing with leases'. °
Mr. Foreman opposed the motion, which lapsed. Tt was resolved to instruct the Board's solicitor to proceed with the .preparation of the Bill. '
The Clifton Rowing Club asked for «nd was 'granted permission to erect a landing at their shed. Tt was decided to give the dredge master a month's notice to dispense with his service, and re-offer him a position under the Board a+ £lf) ))or 1110 nth. Accounts swounting to £l."(i los M were passed for payment.
