ALLEGED THIEF CAPTURED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Yesterday. After two months' search the police have arrested a laboring man, aged aimut. thirty years, on a charge of stealing the "Leader" 'picture from the Ait Gallery. A detective, acting upon Information, made a smart capture by arresting the suspect about 5.,'10 in the vicinity of Bolton Street Cemetery, ami iu addition he secured the missing pic-, hire. Exactly how they succeeded the detectives are not prepared to slate at! present. They were aware, however,' that the picture was to be conveyed by. a messenger to a certain place, and acting on this advice they appeared on the scene at the right moment and secured the picture. All through the search the detectives had a most discouraging task. Thevj frequently succeeded in drawing the' suspect to a certain point, but beyond | this they could not get him to venture.! There .ore s<ome grounds, it is understood, for connecting the two disappear-! ances of the picture with the one and the same individual. f At the Magistrate's Court this morning Francis Edwin Tier was charged with stealing from the Art Gallery an oil painting by Leader, entitled "Southward from Surrey's Pleasant Hills." Ac-i cused, who is described as a laborer,' about thirty years of age, was remanded till Wednesday next! \ FURTHER ARRE>T. 1 Wellington, Last. Xight, Michael Tier, brother of Francis Tier, has also been arrested in connection waa the theft of the Leader picture from the J Art Gallery. He will Ibe charged to-1 morrow, with breaking and enterim; andi theft.
