Mr. F. Simpson, Commissioner of Crown Lands, Taranaki, iB on a visit to Wellington on departmental business Mr. Charles Beeby, the oldest resident of Qucenstown, died ou Monday. He had a long life, his birthday dating back as far as June 19, 1815, the day after Waterloo.

Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P., and Mrs. Jennings arrived in Wellington on Thursday evening for the purpose of bidding farewell to their son, Mr. Harold Jennings, who left by the Warrimoo for ■Sydney yesterday, en route for England. Colonel Xewall, in responding to a toast at the Veterans' Association dinner at Wellington the other day, expressed great satisfaction with the award of the New Zealand Cross to Mr. H. W. Northcroft, S.M., whom he had known in the Taranaki war as Captain Henry Northcroft. Perhaps Captain Northcroft had not much of the "snnviter in modo," hut the "fortiter in re" like a comet burned. Yet many a time another, man's burden was carried on the broad shoulders of Captain Northcroft.
