CONSIDERATION FOR COUNTRY CHILDREN. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, May 18. The Biennial Conference on Secondary Education opened to-day. Mr. J. P. Firth, of Wellington, was elected president for the next two years. The Minister of Education, in the course of his address, mentioned that the nmn'ber of pupils receiving instruction in higher than .primary education ihad increased from 1,545 in 1903 to 29,992 in 1908. The proportion per 10,000 of population represented an. increase from IC)S in 1903 to 298 in 1908. The Minister referred to the better working conditions and increase or expenditure in secondary school work. The conference resolved that it is desirable that a uniform system of class naming be adopted in secondary schools, also that a certain number of national scholarships should be set aside for country children, also that medical inspection of secondary schools is advisable.
