The Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, in an interview with a N.Z. Times' representative, stated that a saving of £210,000 had been effected on the annual appropriations. There had been an increase of £89,100 on the working Railway and Post and Telegraph account, due entirely to the greater volume of business transacted necessitating,, o t course, increased expenditure to cope with it. Though the Post and Telegraph Department's figures, coupled as they were with the sale of stamps, indicated a reduced revenue for the year, the figures for the Department's workins: showed an excess of £40,000 in revenue compared with tJie previous yearly period. The Customs increase was not unexpected, in view of the remissions at the rate of £405,000 per annum made by the tariff of 1008, and the fact that the imports last year went down considerably. "The gratifying fact remains," said Sir Joseph, ".that the revenue of .all departments has increased by £237,076. It will be found, on examining the expenditure, that in eleven departments there is a decrease against the preceding year of £210,233. while the increase in five departments tota'ls £111,253. If you deduct the increase from the decreases you will find that the net annual saving on actual appropriations is £08,000." LAST QUARTER'S STATEMENT. Wellington, Last Night. A statement of the receipts and expenditure of the Consolidated Fund for the, quarter ended 31st March, 1010 and 190!) respectively, appears in the Gazette to-night. The receipts were £2,906,537, as against £3,282.807 in 1009, whilst the expenditure was £2,906,537. as against £3,282.897 in 1909.
