185 MEN KILLED. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright, New York, May 5. An explosion at the Palos coal mine, near Birmingham, Alabama, is reported. Up to the present 185 men are reported killed. A SHEET OF FLAME VOMITED. RESCUE WORK AT A STANDSTILL. Received May f>. 11.15 p.m. New York, May C. A sheet of flame shot from the mouth of the Palos mine, accompanied fey a tremendous report. The clerk, who was a hundred yards away, was instantly killed. Three bodies were recovered. Rescue work was temporarily abandoned owing to the black damp.
