A BOOKMAKER FIXED. By Telegraph—Press Association. llokitika, Tuesday. Mr. Hewitt, S.M., convicted and lined a Greymouth bookmaker named C. Noel £'2o and costs for betting at the Westland A. and P. Show, holding that the racing events held in connection therewith did not constitute a race meeting within the meaning of the Gaming Act. ALLEGED WIFE DESERTION. Grevmoutli. Last Night. Herinn't Budge Thornton Shearman, who was brought hack from Auckland, charged with wife desertion and obtaining money under false pretences, was ■brought before the Court to-day. He pleaded guilty to two charges of false pretences, and was. remanded till Thursday 011 the other charges.
