OYSTERS AND DISEASE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Saturday. It has been decided that no rock oysters will be taken this year from the northern oyster beds. Mr." Ayson, Inspector of Fisheries, having visited these beds, recommends that owing- to the depletion that has taken place these beds should be given a rest. At most there would be only six mouths' supply. Young oysters have .been taken to these beds, .but they will take four years to mature.
A SCHOOL OF COMMERCE. Auckland, Saturday. The Auckland Chamber of Commerce is interesting itself in the work of the School of Commerce connected with the Auckland University College. It is proposed to establish a Degree of Commerce and an Assoeiateship of Commerce, and to aim aC imparting by special lectures hy prominent commercial men, sound instruction in practical commerce, .business men will be asked to recognise this uegree as a mark ot efficiency. The Chamber also proposes to found several scholarships.
WORK IN AUCKLAND.

No difficulty is neing experienced' by the Auckland branch of the Labor Department in finding work for nil applicants who are willing to work in cue country. Between the Ist and 20th of April a total of 153 men were directed to avenues of employment, 107 of that number being placed under private employers, while the remaining 4(1 were despatched to Government works. An arrangement Is proposed for the union of the ■businesses of the Mutual Life and Citizens' Assurance Company and the Australian Widows' Fund Life Assurance Society. The policy-holders of the latter institution are at present being communicated with, asking if they approve of the sclieme. It is stated in the circulars being issued that Die proposed arrangement will result in a company being established which will be stronger than either institution taken separately, and it will consequently be able to oiler the policy-holders of both institutions greater benefits than would otherwise be possible, and that it is in order to secure for the societies' members such largely increased benefits in the future that the directors strongly recommend the proposed arrangement. At a meeting of the Waikato Miners' Union on Wednesday sreaf. dissatisfaction was expressed. The feelinsr among the men is that matters will reach a crisis shortly.
