The owners of the Countess of Ranfurly wished to have the inquiry into the wreck held here, but it transpires that a preliminary inquiry was held by the British Consul at Noumea. That functionary, finding the vessel was registered in Auckland, sent the result ol his inquiry to that port, and the local superintendent of navigation doubts whether he has jurisdiction, but is making inquiries to see whether he can Hold an investigation and thus' save expense to the officers and crew, through having to proceed to Auckland.
