GREAT GALE.
NEW CALEDONIA SWEPT. DREADFUL DISASTER. NATIVES STARVING. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received April 19, 8.45 p.m. Sydney, April 19. A steamer from Noumea brings news of the cyclone which swept New Caledonia at the end of last month. It wrought great devastation in the Loyalty Group. At the Is'land of Mare, three tidal waves in quick succession swept far up the land, destroying trees and plantations.
Every trader's house, excepting one, was destroyed, and the huts of tlhe natives were blown bodily away. Hundreds of natives sought refuge in caves. All their plantations' are destroyed, and! they are left almost without food. Other islands in the group also suffered. A ketch arrived at Noumea from Mare on the 7th inst. with tidings of the disaster, and it was .proposed to despatch a French warship from Noumea with food and clothing for the \mfortunate islanders. The ketch Arthur left Noumea for Mare on March 28, but she is missing.
