THE PALMERSTON SENSATION

POWELKA AS A PRISONER. 111S ONLY UEGRET. By Telegraph—Press Association. Palmerston North, Monday. Powelka wa.s taken to Wellington by the early train this morning. The prisoner travelled in a special carriage with Sergeant Dart and the Wellington contingent of police who have been engaged in the search for him.

It is understood here that it is quit* possible Powelka will not be brough before the Court again till the whole a the occurrence of the past two weeki have been fully investigated. Powelka is at presontunder committal for theft.

Detective Cassels and Siddels are remaining at Palmerston to investigate the eases of supposed incendiarism and robbery under arms, aNo the affray leading to Use death of Sergeant Maguire. Powelka was not greatly communi. rative yesterday after his .recapture. However, he called the gaoler to him find said: "The only thing lam sorry about is that T did not shoot Archio Mcßae. T went to Shannon after him, and there 1 heard he 'was here. If ever I get out again 1 will shoot him." Prisoner, it is understood, blames Meßae, who is not known here, for all his troubles, particularly in connection with the thefts of furniture. The police, however, do not attach much value to the statement.
