THE WAIKARE ROCK

The uncharted rock which caused the wreck of the Union Company's fine passenger steamer Waikare has apparently been located by the Government training steamer Amoktira, which returned to Bluff on Saturday morning from Dusky Sound. The Amokura was despatched to search for the obstruction, and Commander' Hooper telegraphed to the Marine Department as follows: "Discovered that a rocky patch exists bearing north 25 degrees east magnetic, from the north-west point of Indian Island. The least depth ascertained was 12ft. at low water, ordinary spring tides). The outermost rock of the patch is distant upwards at one and a half cables from the point mentioned, and is distant one cable from the foreshore. The patch is in extent a quarter cable east northeast and slightly less in width, and is steep to on the north and western s'ides, having a channel between it and the foreshore carrying six to seventeen fathoms of water. F.xcepting this patch the channel on the north-western side of Indian Island anpears clear, the shin failing to find anything else with twentv fathom sounders which the ship constantly trailed."

The position of the patch is practically identical with the soot where the Waikare was reported to have struck.
