The Bank of England returns for the past week are as follows:—Gold coin, £32,028,000; reserve, £22,765,000; proportion of to liabilities,i 39.55; note circulation, £28,932,000; public deposits, £10,673,000; other deposits, £46,864,000; Government securities, £18,475,000; other securities, £33,983,000.
THE MONEY MARKET.
The hank rate is 4 per cent, for short Joans and 3% per cent, for three months loans. Best bills are discounted in London at 3 13-16 per cent.; in Paris at 2% per cent., and in Berlin at 3 per cent. GOVERNMENT SECURITIES. Consols, £Bl ss. Victorian 4 per cents., £lO3 10s; W-/ % per cents., £.98 12s 6d; 3 per cents., £B6 10s. South Australian 3y 2 per cents., £9B 7s 6d. Queensland 4 per cents., £lO4 10s; 3% per cents., £97; 3 per cents., £B7. Tasmanian 3y 2 per cents., m9B. Westralian 3% per cents., £97 10s; 3 per cents., £B7 10s. Other stocks unchanged. PRODUCE MARKETS.
Wheat.—The market is steady, anil fair business is being clone. lUerc is some Continental enquiry for Australian cargoes, and 12,000 quarters of -JanuaryFebruary shipments have been sold at 39s 6d. Holders are asking 3!)s fid for sailer April shipment, 30s 3d for February, 30s 4y 2 d for March, and 3Ss Od for steamer parcels afloat. There is a small retail demand for Australian spot. Nothing is doing in New Zealand wheat, which is quoted at 35s to 35s fid c.i.f. for April-May steamer shipments. Flour.—Nothing doing; spot supplies exhausted. Sales in Glasgow for May shipment brought 20s 9d landed. . Oats. —Ther.e is poor demand; prices are about unchanged. "A" quality bartons are quoted at 18s 3d to 18s Od c.i.f., April shipment; La Plata AprilMay shipment, 14s 3d. Butter. —Market very firm. There is an excellent demand. The Osterlev's shipment- has been all cleared at late rates for choicest. Copper. Spot £57 ISs Od, three months £SO.
Tin.—Spot -£l5O 7s fid, three months £152 ins. Lead, £l2 15s. Spelter. £23. Iron, 51s fid. Susnr. —German 14s Bd. first marks 10s lOcl. Wool.—The Bradford wool'market is very firm.
