£4150 6 8 The excise duty for the month was *54 3s. The returns for the corresponding 'period of last year were:—General tariff, £3674 0s 7d; ■■preferential tariff, £l6 4s 9d; total, £3690 5s 4d. The excise fees amounted to £64 ss. During the quarter ending March 31 the returns were: General tariff £9547 Is 3d; preferential tariff, £lO3 14s; South African, £9l; surtax. £169 10s 3d; total, £9911 5s 6d. The totals for the year, compared with the previous year, figures for which are shown in parentheses, were:—Customs duties, £41,645 2s 2d (£38,927 14s sd); other receipts, £1450 9s 6d (£2084 lis 4d); total, £43,095 lis Sd (£41,012 5s 9d). This shows a g&m in Customs duties of £2717 7s 9d, a decrease of £634 Is lOd in other receipts i (accounted for by the fact that harbor ■boards now collect their own dues), leaving a net increase of £2083 5s lid.
AUCKLAND. By Telegraph.—Praia As*n«att<m. Auckland, Saturday. The Customs returns for the port of Auckland for March show that the net duties collected amounted to £60.071 6s 7d and the surtax £1549 18s 4d: compared with £59,078 15s 3d for the corresponding month of last year. This is an increase of nearly £IO,OOO. The beer duty amounted" to £2347 2s 7d. as against' £2038. a decrease of about £2SI. The export returns indicate a steady development of trade and the majority of the lines show substantial increases: and in other lines the average is well maintained, except in frozen meats, the export of which was affected by the slaughtermen's strike. Wool advanced to the phenomenal extent of over £138.000. There was an increase of some £34.000 in cheese and £IO.OOO increases are •shown in butter and kauri gum.
