FIRES.

KOW OF SHOPS DESTROYED. Uy Telegraptt.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. A serious fire occurred after midnight in a row of shops in Manchester street. The top floor throughout the building was occupied by Bunting and Co. (brusii makers). The five shops on the lower floor were occupied by-Dollan (bootmaker), Holland (hairdresser), Macphail and fisher (leather merchants) and two tea-rooms. Bunting also had a buildin'g at the "back of the shops'. When the alarm was given this building and a portion of tlhe front building 'were Ablaze. The fire brigade consequently had the utmost difficulty in dealing with the outbreak. The flames spread rapidly to both floors. The new highpressure water supply gave plentiful provision, but the contents of the shops and factory were highly inflammable. It was after 2 o'clock when the fire was in hand. The Trocadero Private Hotel at one time was threatened, and Scott and Morgan's motor works were also in danger. Bunting owned the building and factory, which were valued at £7OOO. Particulars* of insurance are not available. Bunting says no one had been in his factory since Thursday. He is unable to account for the fire An outbreak occurred in the same block at Easter, 1907.

A seven-roomed wooden house at Dorie, owned and occupied by William Morrow, with its contents, was totally destroyed by fire early on Sunday morn ing. The insurance is not ■yet ascertainable. OUTBREAK AT WANGANUI. Wanganui, Last Night. Messrs Gilbert and Sons' soap works were de-s'troyed by fire on Saturday night They estimate their loss at between £2500 and £3OOO above the insurance.
