STRATFORD DAY BY DAY.
(From Our Resident Correspondent.)
Stratford, March 14. 1 If the alterations of the steamer com- 1 munication between New Plymouth and Wellington outlined in to-day's News are given effect to it will at least oe some improvement, but in order to properly remedy the present unsatisfactory state of affairs it will be necessary that the bi-weekly service arrive on Tuesdays and Saturdays, or better still on Tuesdays and Fridays. The contention that the increased value of imports passing over the New Plymouth wharves shows that trade is not being diverted to any appreciable extent does not affect the statement that a great deal of trade from this town, which by rights should come through New Plymouth, is now draining through Patea. News' was received in Stratford yesterday of the death at Sydney of Mrs C. Clayton, wife of Mr Charles Clayton, at one time a member of the firm of Clayton Bros. The deceased was well known in Stratford as an amateur vocalist. A reception will be held at the borough Council Chambers on April 7 to' which councillors, ex-councillors and their wives will be invited, when a silver cradle will be presented to Mr Sangster, Mayor of the town, to commemorate the birth of a Son during hi* term of office. The -Minister for Railways has written the Borough Council that he is odtaining a report on the booking on'ice accommodation at the Stratford railway station. It is to be hoped that the re port mentions the uses that this portion of the station is put to. This morning it resembled a second-hand dealer's shop or an auction mart rather than a public building. On one side was to be seen furniture, boxes and a stack of cases of kerosene, whilst on the ot'.ier side of the narrow passage left tor p. ss'engers to pass through was a tab'e surmounted by numerous cases of fruit. An application from the residents of Hamlet street that a light be erecW at the corner of Hamlet and Romeo streets was referred to the Lighting Committee of the Borough Council to report on. The committee might very well consider the necessity of having lights erected in many other streets where they flre needed. --<-•>««• At the meeting of the Borough Council last night the report of the Works Committee recommending that a footpath on Warick street be placed on the list of authorised works, that in tire event of the Domain Board erecting a bridge over the Patea river in King Edwards Park that the Council construct a footbridge over the Patea river at Cordelia. street was adopted. The •
' Works Committee were asked to re-1 j port on the erection of a footbridge I over the Patea river at Orlando street. ! The annual meeting of the Stratford! Association Football Club will be held on ThurscViy night. ' j Last night through the blooking of , the tunnel at the Electric Light Works j by debris brought down by the swollen river, the water power was affected, I with .tlie consequent result that the Might was very poor. The general opinion in regard to tn? I team selected to play the Australia.is | is' that it is about the best. As I smr- | mised nreviouslv tlm five Southerners who did so well against the North have lw?n chosen, and there is no doubt the r inclusion will strengthen the side. The general meeting of the Stratfo.l ! Ladies' Hockey Club is being held th s evening. ! The Borough Council have appointe! Crs. Kirtg, Budge and Masters a committee to arrange details in connect'rn with the Governor's visit. :
