WAITARA NEWS
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
Despite the fact that Waitara, according to one of the very learned legal practitioners of New Plymouth, is "on the borders of civilisation," the public very generously subscribed the sum of between £lB and £2O to assist in 'paying the expenses of the Band to Wie Wanganui contest. If a census were taken it would be found that the population is nearer 1500 than 300, and this fact must have been known to the legal luminary when he made his disparaging remark. For the month of February the Waitara Dairy Company paid out to suppliers the s'um of £938 lis 7d, as against £827 18s id for February, 1809, an. increase of £llO 13s 6d. The increase as against January month of this year was £47 Is 7d. The amount of milk supplied was 560,920 lbs. as against 459,910 for the corresponding mouth of last year, an increase of 5256 lbs, or 2 ton 6 cwt 104 lbs. The butterfat amounted to 23,725 lbs. as against 19,872, an increase of 3853 lbs. It took nearly 20y 2 lb. of milk to make a pound of butter, and the average tes was 4.229. The supply this year is keeping u;p well. North Taranaki Dairy Company pay to their suppliers for February £940 17s 2d as against £.UI4 18s lid for February 1909, an increase of £325 18s 3d. Milk received amounted to 584,404 lb, which produced 23,79/ lb of butter fat, from which 27,836 lb of butter was manufactured. The increase in butter fat amounted to 15,675 lb, and butter 17,516, a total of 7 ton 16 cwt 44 lb. It required 20 lb of milk to make a pound of butter, and the average test was 5.07. There is every indication of a further large increase next season.
In all probability both the Waitara and North Taranaki Dairy Companies will be prepared to' receive cream from suppliers >vho live too far away from the factories or have roads to traverse that would prevent them from bringing milk, and by the adoption of this method will materially increase their supply. The Clifton Football Club have appointed Mr T. Buchanan to again represent them at the annual meeting of the Taranaki Rugby Union. • Mr J. Cameron, harbourmaster, returned from his month's holiday by Monday morning's boat from Auckland, but unfortunately .the change and rest lhas not had quite the desired result, and Mr Cameron will need to extend his leave.
It is expected that the large additions to the Cli'fton Rowing Clulvs shed, entailing an expenditure of some ,£2OO, will be commenced this week. It is the Club's intention to turn the present shed into a social hall, carry the side rooms the whole length of tiie building, and erect a new boat shed at the river end of the present structure. This will allow of a hall 54x24 ft, a hoatshed of the same dimension, two dressing rooms and a large supper room, the three combined having a space of 108x10 ft. A piano will also be 'purchased.
The warn rains are having a' very beneficial effect on the growtih of grass, and there should be a very fair amount of winter feed for stock. Unfortunately turnipsf will be a failure in most cases, for although from the road a crop looks in good condition, most of them are really rotten, owing no doubt to the heavy rains and extreme heat having the effect of opening the top and .allowing the water to get inside, the result being that in most cases farmers will have very little to depend on during the winter so far as turnips are concerned. Maize crops 1 have done won-, derfully well, an abundance of feed having been obtained from this source. Several business people have signified their intention of erecting much more commodious premises now that they have obtained leases from the Harbour Board under the new terms. In all oases brick will be used in the inner area. An application has been received by His Worship the Mayor from the secretary of the Cricket Association, asking that a. half holiday be declared on Tuesday, the date of the fixture of the cricket match, but unfortunately he i 3 unable to comply with the request, «ts Tuesday iy an important day with the business people, and they would not be likely to fall in with the idea.
