To-day was the iirst day of the real contests of the Trentham meeting, as it was now that the championship congests began. The contest had an added interest, for the pic' of New South •Wales were to compete, and although tile meiTTiaiPbSHl them slioot yesterday, j they were anxious to see what they | would do now. AE a quarter to eight I the opening shot was tired. The match | set down was the Nelson Hatch, ten shots at 500 and 600 (sic) yards. The weathe r '\vas~Till that could* be desired, j *K*uii a. soft ligUl and a light, steady breeze, and asTi result the scoring was high. Seventy-five targets were used for the first'time in the history of Xew Zealand shooting, and greatly facilitated the work. Just after starting, a change came over, and tricky Trentham commenced to justify its name. FisTitails and changing light were the order of the day, and tTiose who went down to it. had a streak of bad luck. Again il changed to ideal weather, and then there was a slight shower and more wind. The quality of the men was shown by the excellent scoring. The Australians did nothing startling in the mornimj. ■The beat scores at 500 yds were McLeay and Grover, who made possibles, ami G. Loveday, Williams (Ohura). Frank! Fisher, Tingey, Motion (Australia). Manssen (Eden), L. Loveday (Marenga), and Porritt (Australia), each 40. At, the 800 yds, which was being fired simultaneously, possibles were made by Reynolds, Masefield, F. Franklin, Frank, and _Duthie (Bruce). 0"f these Frank and Masefield were two who had good scores at the other range. Hunt, Hawthorne, and Anderson (Auckland) made 49. About one o'clock a start was made with tiTT3Tfiyi7s' 4 r!riTge of the Wellington Match and the 800 yds of the Otago Match. The shooting 'was extremely difficult, and in the Otago Match there was only one possible, namely, Armorer-Ser-geant Cutler (Xew South Wales). .Mannsen (Xelson) put up 40, and Halli(Karori), Yeo (Auckland). Clyde (Wfikari), Fisher (Wellington), and Buschl (Waimea) 48. The principal prize-winners in the Xelson Match, at 500 and 800 yards, ten shots at each, were—Sergeant. Frank (Xelson), £5, 00; Masefield (Sounds), £4, 90; Hawthorn (Weber), £4, 05 ; Cuthbertson (Tuamarina). Kandell (Linton), Oovenloek (Woodville), £3 eaeli: Loveday (Ohura), £2, 05; Rollinson Grendell (Xapier), Xarbov (Eltham), £2 each. The 500 yds range of the Wellington Match was fired concurrently with the 800y<Sj range of £7ie Otago Mutch, and. despite the conditions, the shootintr was at times brilliant.
