The population of the State on 31st December last was 1,045,445, an increase of 4430 on the previous year. The excess of births over deaths was 27,930, and the excess of arrivals over departures 12,506. NEW COALFIELD. Sydney, September 25. A splendid coal seam Iras been discovered at Katoomba. It is' believed to be a continuation of the Litligow seam. A DERELICT SIGHTED. Sydney. February 25. The steamer Thistleroy, which has arrived from the Tyne. reports that during; a heavy gale on January 23. while in latitude Sfldeg. south, longitude 21deg. east, she passed an upturned boat, painted white and covered with marine growth. There was no sign of wreckage in the vicinity. SOUTH AUSTRALIAN FLOODS. Adelaide, February 25. Heavy floods have occurred in the Terowie district. Wasliawa,\ff on the railway practically isolated Broken Hill. ROBBERY UNDER ARMS. Brisbane, February 25. A man entered the Albion branch of the Queensland Bank and fired point blank at the teller, evidently with Wank j cartridge. The teller rushed for his re- | volver, but the man jumped the counter, i grabbed 70 sovereigns from a gold tray and escaped.
