TRAMWAY STRIKE IN EARNEST

The Times' Washington correspondent States that the Philadelphia strike is attributable to political corruption. The Republican machine in the city is a byword for dishonesty, particularly in connection with the tramways. Seven hundred and fifty cars have been destroyed. The total casualties are: Dead and dying 12, seriously injured 01, including 31 policemen. One car depot was dynamited. "Militia were posted at twenty yards intervals, but this plan proved a fiasco. Women stuck tin bayonets into the 1 men and cut off the militiamen's butI tons as souvenirs. The gaols are overcrowded, and business is paralysed. The trials of prisoners have begun, the sentences ranging from two to six years' imprisonment. AN EFFECTIVE FORCE. Received February 26, 12.45 a.m. New York, February 25.
