Mr. Deakin, Federal Premier, controverted Mr. Hughes' argument that t.lie main issue at the elections was a progressive laud tux. The Commonwealth, he said, hail the sole power of indirect taxation, and so long as that was sufficient for its needs he had no intention of interfering with the State prerogative of direct taxation. Only in extreme cases would the Commonwealth's power to resort to direct taxation be exercised.
