THE KAIPARA INQUIRY.
SURVEY OF THE CHANNEL. By Telegraph—Press,' Association. Auckland, Last Night. A feature of the Kaipara inquiry this afternoon was the evidence given by Mr. Brighara, secretary of the Harbor Board, who handed in correspondence regarding two instances in which ships were alleged to have touched the bottom of the fairway in Rangitoto channel—the French warship Dugesne, about twenty years' ago, and the Waimate, in July, *1904. The harbormaster's report in the latter case was that the Waimate w,as to the westward of the deep water channel, and the Admiralty survey gave ample directions for passing through the channel. In 1903 the Harbor Board, by telegram to members of both Houses of Parliament, urged a survey of the Hauraki Gulf, but the matter was deferred. Questioned regarding the board surveying on their own account, ho said the Hydrographers Department would not allow any surveys to be put on their chart unless made by their own officers, and the work wan "too big for a local 'body.
