He trusted tlie spirit which made union possible, but argued that if those in the majorit/. | adopted a top-dog policy the anion would be a curse instead of a. blessing. T 1 j about coalition seemed to him foolish and mischievous, and be added: " Coalition is impossible. They must make the Government an effective instrument. A good Opposition and a good Parliament are as necessary as Covernment." Although he favored the utmost protection of and assistance for mines, he emphasised the danger of the insidious power of money in polities.
