Sydney, Saturday. Mr. Bowling, secretary of the Coal Miners' Union, informed an interviewer he was not surprised that the coal lumpers refused to handle the Palermo's coal. He <lid not tlunk any sell-re-specting unionist would handle "scab' coal.
When Mr. Hughes heard of Mr. Bowling's statement he 'gave his views to the Press. He declared that Mr. Bow-1 ling's attitude was different from that which he assumed at the strike congress. He said he must decline Lo permit Mr. Bowling or any other man to ruji with the hare and hunt with t.ic hpunds. Mr. Bowling voted for the resolution in favor of coal being handled, and even offered to go to the lumpers and tell them to handle it.
Mr. Wade has issued a statement showing that • the Bellambi Coal Company offered the Railway Commissioners 7000 tons at the price prevailing before the strike, and that the offer has been accepted. The Premier commended this' public-spirited action to other owners, and added that if private owners attempted to exploit the public the Government would stop iu and scenic coal from any source to checkmate any attempt to bleed the community. The electric lighting of Sydney can be maintained until 10th January, hut the gas lighting will cease in eleven days. The municipal authorities arc fitting up lamps to burn kerosene. The Railway Commissioners are fitting up several locomotives to take oil fuel.
