TURF TOPICS. (By "Moluroa.") The sport of king>'--and other fellows —will be raging at Takapuna to-day. There's nothing like an early start! Some people will be picking all the winners to-day for the Taranaki Christmas nice Ling.. That go-ahead racing club, the Feiluing .1.C., will ihold its spring gathering on Tuesday aud Wednesday next. The Flying Handicap at Fcilding will take some picking. Miss Winnie, (.iolden .Eagle and Irish RiJle are heard most about. The big race should make an easy " second leg" for punters. The 'redoubtable Advocate—Deeley combination has' a liking for the Taka.puna course, and will run hi the St. Andrew's Handicap to-day. Trainer J. W. Lowe's reps, at Feilding next week will comprise Longner, Truganini, Lord Kelvin, and Magneto. Lord Kelvin will start in the Fcilding Stakes. Wild West's -hamper in the Auckland Railway Handicap is 7.4, not (.0 as telegraphed. C'yinri ran well forward at Ellerslie reeetftly, when only half ready, and the hurdler will be a much improved horse at Takapuna. The dividend-payers in the New Zealand Cup—Nady Lucy and Rooseveldt—have put up some stirring contests this season, and opinions appear to be very much divided as Co which will be first home in the big race at Fcilding on Tuesday.
The cx-Tarauaki sprinter, St. .Maria, has taken kindly to the illegitimate game, and her displays over the battens at Ellerslie have been very attractive. Siie is engaged in the Maiden Hurdles at Takapuna this afternoon. Ci Pritehard has taken Mon Ami, Miscast, Dangikapua. and the much-raced Whntakura to Feilding. If Mon Ami is well she may run well* up in 'the flying, and Miscast has been showing winning form lately. Hangikapua is troubled with the slows, ami Whataknra never eats bis tucker two weeks running in the same town. He gets far 'too much travelling to give bun a chance to get fit for a race.
Jockey J. McConilic, vim has been up against trouble lately, lias handed in his riding license, and will in future devote his time to training neddies'. His first charge, Tawhaki, is a good sort ot a horse to start on, and .probably better luck will attend liiin in his new line. Antoinette was taken lmine to Auckland last week, and the filly's form is evidently too bad to continue her Fcilding Stakes engagement. The wheels of justice stopped last week wlien a Tiniaru jockey succeeded in dodging juror's duties on account ot riding engagements clashing -with ihe Supreme Court fixtures'. The Jiopetul jockster told his Honor that he "hoped
to ride a winner," and the judge's sporting instincts getting the better of hiin,\ the horseman was released. When a man isn't getting compensa-1 tion from the Government or some such benevolent institution he soon forgets' his ailments. Sid Keid's collar-bone, I broken at the Cup meeting, is reported' all right again, and the Wairarapa I horseman will lie piloting the long-legged j quadrupeds at Pudding next week. Uiecarton advices stale that Boutado. who came to grief in the running ot the I'Viuhilton Handicap, is making a good recovery and will shortly be put into work. Chief Lochiel has broken down, or broken up or something, and together with his siter, Scotch i'Jaui. has gone lo Ashburton for an extended spell. (This par. seems to have win-: dered from the ladies' column.) Tiie liiiancial position of the' successful jockey in Fog Laud In! considerably belter than that of the Prime Minister and heaps of other noted parties. Jockey Frank Wootton lias accepted the modest retainer of £2500 for first call on iris services next season, Lord Derny being the successful tenderer. Seconu and third retainers for the same jockey read like big prizes in TattersaUs, and j if his neck doesn't collapse or his weight run up to that of a healthy person he promises to have a good innings next : venr.
Maika is on the improve, ami ran a solid race in the Plying at Alexandria Park on Saturday. Mighty Atom and Carniiinia led (he locally-trained lilliputian home, but it was a close finish and the time was fast. Mahingn, with the steadier of list, aboard, was just outside a place, and Orange and Blue, a one-time champion, came in last with the minimum in the saddle. If Carniaiiia "comes through" there will be any amount of money for her all over Wardland this' afternoon.
The following remain in the Feilding Stakes: Lord Soult, Gold Crest. Longner, Gipsy Belle, Broadsword, Tenterhook, Inveran, Nautiform. Ormolu , Crown Derby, True Shot, Kohiuoor, Montifnrm, Lord Kelvin, Master Laddo and Antoinette. Gold Crest won the race last year with Ost. 91b, but is, said to-be very backward in condition, and may not "face the music" this year. The following penalties will be put up at Feilding:—Flying Handicap: Bliss llllbs (7.3). Aorangi Welter: Thetis lOlbs (9.12). St. Andrew's Handicap: Stayboy lOlbs (11.5). Reumac 10IIW (9.13).' Kiwitea Welter: Cyrene lOlbs (8.10). Fitzroy Flying Handicap: Golden Loop lOlbs (8.(1). The weights to be carried are in parentheses.
