THE HAWERA SHOW
Mr. W. H. Wyboume's champion Lincoln ram is easily one of the finest specimens of his kind ever seen iu Lite Dominion. The animal attracted a deal ot attention at the Hawera show. Put on the scales at Palmerston recently, he registered no less a weight than 4201b. The high-leaping competition at the Hawera Show brought out seven excellent horses. Mr. N. M. Patcrson's Hacre cleared sft. 2i7i., the same horse winnin" the event with 4ft. 10y 2 in. Mr. J. L° Fogarty's Midnight jumped into second place, and Mr. C. Gordon's Cavil and Aberdeen tied for third honors, ine special prize for best rider in the event wasJ won by Mr. A. Gordon, Wangauui. At the Hawera showgrounds Mr. Newton King had an interesting exhibit consisting of farming implements, 'wool presses, motor cars, hides, etc. The hides display was an instructive one to the farmers, showing as it did the great difference between the prices of properly cured hides and those indifferently treated. The Kidd Milking Machine, lii working order, also afforded much luterest to dairymen. Messrs. E. Griffiths and Co. exhibited an extensive assortment of Sutton's seeds. Messrs). T. Borthwick and Sons had on view, a nice oxlubit of preserved meats and manures. Messrs. Young, Hobbs and Co.'s exhibit consisted of grass seeds, implements', etc. The competition for dairy cow with best butter-fat yield, held at" the Hawera show grounds, resulted as' under:—J. S. T. Short's Golden Queenie, giving 1.9 lbs butter-fat, 1; W. J. Lovelock's Lady of Cliffside, 1.0 lbs butter-fat, 2; Newton King's Nazli's Gem, 1.4 lbs of butterfat, 3. The milk-testing contest 'or school pupils resulted in the following points being awarded:—Johannc Melville (Kaponga), 90 points; Kathleen Groves (Okaiawa) and Nellie Signal (Kaponga), each 94; Elsie Cantelin (Okaiawa), 92; Charles Cantelin (Okaiawa), 90; Violet Baird (Kaponga), 88; Thos. Schneller (Okaiawa), 86; Ralph Kime (Kaponga), §4; Frank Olivers (Okaiawa), Hose Carmichael and Susan Edgecombe (Kakaramea), each 82; Ellen Reeve and Ruby Blake (Kakaramea) and Leo Abbott (Kaponga), each 80. Four prizes were awarded, ranging from 25s to ss.
The result of the dairy herd competition at Hie llawera show created considerable interest amongst dairymen. The herds consisted of twenty cows and upwards, and were judged on general appearance, the exhibitor to be allowed, in the presence of the judge, tn throw out ten per cent, of bis total herd over and above 20 head. The test and weight of milk were taken into account, tne exhibits being judged on the owner's property. The competition resulted as follows:—Mr. R. D. Harkness (Xgaire), 87 points'. 1; Mr. A. J. Hastie (Manainl. 84 points. 2: Mr. It. C. I.ysagnt (Aiokoia), 80 points. 3; Mr. ll.' Hodge (Alton). 78 points, 4. Other competitors were Mr. William Hooper (Tokaora), .7 points; .Mr. I!. .1. 1/niu iNormanby). 70 points): Mr. .lames Were (Xormanhyi, 7(1 points; Mr. S. ('. Tonks (Manutalii), 70 points. The first prize was £lO 10s; second, t~> ss; third, C2 2s. Tn addition, the first award carried a trophy, to be won twice in succession or three times at intervals, also a special cash prize of £1 los.
