One hundred and sixty-eight bodies were found in the Cherry mine in a great tangled mass, blocking the staircase of the third to second coal vein. Their escape was blocked by falling debris.
The men succumbed to black damp while endeavoring to push through the obstructions while waiting for rescuers. Evidently they bad been alive for days. Two wooden fans, affixed to the shaft wall, were turned by hand in a frantic effort to brush back the Muck damp. A miner was found firmly gripping the fnn. The victims left notes written on pieces Of slate.
