NORTHERN UNION GAME. TARANAKI v. WELLINGTON. Describing the match between Ttirasiaki and Wellington on Saturday the Wellington Times says:—For one brief period—the earlier part of tile second spell—play'.reached a. standard which amply demonstrated that, properly played, the game is quite capable of winning its way into public esteem. During the period in question the Taranaki men —who throughout the game showed much more agility and resourcefulness than did their opponents—played with a vim which quite nonplussed the more leisurely home players. Brilliant flaslieof individual and combined play won frequent applause from the spectators. From 9 points to fi in favor of Wellington, at which the'spell opened, the score was quickly changed to 22 to 12 in favor of Taranaki. The borne team then recovered somewhat, and reduced the. lead to 4 points before the wnistle sounded. Moir, WaH'he, Bnckland, O'Driscoll, Allen and Frewin scored for Taranaki, Stroud and Frewin each eonverting one try. For Wellington Twoliill scored three times, Barber twice, and C. Sullivan once. The Taranaki backs, among whom Hargraves was especially prominent, were a clever lot, but excelled more in individual than in combined play, some of the lone incursions of Ffewin, Hargreaves, Buckland, Moir and others into the enemy's territory behg brilliant efforts. Forward, too, the visitors were the cleverer combination, almost invariably getting the ball from 4he scrum. Want of condition was' apparent among the ranks of the losers, among whom Twohill and Barber were the shining lights. Tihe attendance was between 400 and 500.
