KANGAROOS DEFEAT WALLABIES. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Received 5, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, September 5. The Kangaroos defeated the Wallabies ■by 29 to 20. There were 20,000 onsent. The game was fast and closely contested throughout. The .Wallabies appeared to be occasionally at fault in the fine points of the League game. WELLINGTON DEFEATS CANTERBURY. The annual football match ibetweeii the representatives of Canterbury and Wellington ■ took place on Lancaster Park this afternoon in -the presence of a large crowd' of spectators, the gate money, amounting to £248 ,-9s. The ground, though slightly .heavy as the result oti the recent rains, was in very fair order. The game, as played by the Wellington tefim, was a very fast and attractive one, but the home team's .;«- ; lay was disappointing. The game •jpened in a. manner that promised a win for Canterbury, as a smart opening by Burns enabled Weston to score 'oefore the game had 'been going five minutes. Once the Wellington team settled down, it was clear that they were the stronger combination. This .vis particularly so with the forwards, who all through the ignme s'howed much mo.'e dash and skill than their opponents. This gave the Wellington backs some openings, of which they made good use. Wit'h their .forwards beaten, the Canterbury fucks got very few chances in attack, and their combination was not what it should have been. Wellington won by 11 to 6.

'SYDNEY v. NEW ZEALAND UNIVERSITY. Dunedin, Last Night. : The football match, Sydney University v. New Zealand University, ivas played On the Caledonian ground yesterday in splendid weather. The ground was somewhat heavy after the recast rains. The game, taken as a whoic, was uninteresting, and except ia the Jatter lha'lf of the second spell there ' was nothing to arouse enthusiasm on the part of the spectators. The standard of footiball was disappointing, and the game .was chiefly confined to the forwards, in 'which department Sidney appeared to better advantage. (The New Zealand team lacked combination, and though the backs got several opportunities their passing was erratic, and little headway was made. The game resulted in a win for Sydney by 15 points to S. For the winners, tries were scored toy Packley, Fisher and Lane, •the last one being converted, while Fisher also potted a goal. New Zealand's score was obtained by Dansy, after Ongley had beaten the opposition. i Dansey also converted the try.

THE AUCKLAND TEAM'S TOUR. Auckland, Last Night. The Auckland Rugby football team arrived this morning by the Main Trunk express. A match was played yesterday by the team against the Maniap ito representatives at Tc The Auckland team won by 10 points to nil. Tries were scored by Rcnwick (2), Williams and Hagce. The latter converted j two tries.

The Auckland junior representatives defeated Waiuku by 25 points to 6. The touring'team has returned with the principal players unfit, from casualties, the playing of five "matches in a week being too much for some of the team.

THE ASSOCIATION GAME WELLINGTON DEFEATS AUCKLAND Wellington, I/ast Night, The Association 'football match for possession of the Brown Shield between Auckland and Wellington was played here yesterday, and was won by Wellington iby one goal to nil. About three thousand persons "witnessed' the match. The ■weather was fine and tlhc ground in good order.

During an interval at the Waimate Football Club ball on Wednesday evening, the medals won by IPini and "Out" Young for meritorious deeds on the football field during the season were presented to the respective winners. Mr. Young became possessed of his prize medal (donated Iby Mr. T. Taylor) through having shown the most improved form, while Mr. D. J. Hughes' gold jnedal went to Pini for (having scored I the most "points (28).
