Ihe weather was sunny and the weatncr good for the play between Australia ana Essex at Uyton on the second day of the match. Particulars-of the play are as follow-. "40 Gregory, » Gibson, b Buckenham 0 Macartney, b Young Hopkins, c Gibson, b Douglas .', 22 Bardsley accompanied Carter to the wicket.
Carter carried his overnight score to 32, chiefly by late cutting. Gibson caught him by standing back from the wicket.—Two for 40. Trumpcr followed. Both batsmen played steady cricket and liu was hoisted for 40 minutes' play and the century for 75 minutes' play. At the luncheon adjournment the total was 173, Bardsley being 53 and Trumper 71. Resuming, Trumpcr immediately gave an easy chance to Carpenter in the slips. He showed superb driving and leg glancing. He was !«• minutes at the wickets and hit eight tourers.—Three for 170. Bardsley stayed till 205, then he was caught low down at second slip. He played a patient innings for 00, but escaped an easy chance of being run out at 40. fa Gregory succumbed to his first ball, Gibson making a fine catch standing well back from the wicket. The score was unaltered. Macartney lost his wicket in playing forward.—Six for 218. Ransford was unsteady at the start, but livened up afterwards. Seven wickets were down for 228 and eight for 202. The Australians in their first innings made 278. Macalister, not out 27 Cotter, b Douglas 1 O'Connor, on played, b Douglas .. 1 Sundries 14 'Bowling analysis.—Buckenham, three for 07; Young, threo for 83; Mead, none for 45; Douglas, three for 29; Reeves one for 40. Essex in its second innings has lost one wicket for 20. Fane, b O'Connor 0 The Australians' last wicket added 10. The innings lasted 240 minutes. Cotter bowled four no-balls' in his first two overs. Stumps were drawn before six owing to. duskiness. There were over 3000 present.
THE MATCH -ABANDONED. Received September •>, 5.5 p.m. London, September 4. Owing to the rain play did not start till 3.45. The wicket was soft. Assex lost one wicket for 57. Douglas, not out 15 Turner, not out 32 Sundries ' 10 Rain again set in and the match was abandoned. O'Connor took one wicket for 10, and Cotter, none for 3.
