TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") First class acceptances have been received lor the annual meeting of the Marton Racing Club, which opens to-day and will be concluded on Thursday. Provocation, the champion two-year old of last season is due to arrive in Sydney to-day, and all going well Mr. Bidwell's) flier will contest the Australian Jockey Club's Derby on October 2nd. Lady Medallist is galloping in good style and will be given a run in the Shorts Handicap at Marton.
On Trenthaui form St. Bill is accounted leniently treated at Marton, and there is no doubt he is a good horse over five or six furlongs. . ,_ Clemency has incurred a Tibs penalty in the 'Trial Hurdles, which brings her weight up to lOst lib. Her win at the Wanganui Hunt Club meeting was a vary promising performance and her pace, combined 'with smart lumping, should carry her through the season with distraction.
The much-boomed Wirral was a failure at Trenthaui, where it is argued that the heavy going was all against him. VVanganui sports still hold to their contention that Wirral is a champion and if they back their opinion, that prad will carry a heap of coin in whatever races he starts in this week. The going at Marton promises to be good and lie will get a fair trial this time.
The following handicaps have been declared for the Marton Plate, run this afternoon:—Wheroka, list.; Rangikura, (list.; MjontpelieJd 9st.; Sea-wind, 9st.; Arivore, flst.; Kaiwhaka, 9st.; Blue Gum. Bst 121b.; Flying West, Bst 121b.; Hiwera., Bst 111b.; Official, Bst 111b.; Punui, Bst 111b.; Jackmaii, Bst 111b.; llapu, Bst. 111b.; Merry Messenger, Bst. 91b.; Dolce, Bst. 91b.; Tawhaki, 7st. 121b.; First Consol, 7at 121b.; Chauve|in, 7st. 121b.; Rdikorangi, 7st. 9fl!b.; Ariom, 7st. 71b.; Ambrosian, 7st. 71b.; and True Shot, 7st. 71b. Notwithstanding the withdrawal of Lovell and Glengariff the Hunt Club Steeple should be an interesting race, and with nineteen acceptances tbe club should feel well pleased with the good response made by owners of hunters. Winners at the Wanganui and Wairarapa Hunt Club meetings carry penalties wihoh brings their weights up to:— Vagrant, list. 121b5.; Wild Oats, list. 71bs.; Mauri, list. 71bs.; and Sir Lethe, list. 71bs.
Vagrant and Sir Lethe showed good form last week and a good deal of interest ' will be centred in -their next meeting. Waiari is reported to be well forward for spring engagements, and on last season's form should win a few races this year. Timothy galloped nicely on the local tracks last week and is expected to sport silk in the Electric Handicap at Marton.
The New Zealand Cup candidate Sir Prize was not accepted for the Marton Handicap but will probably be taken down to the meeting and given" a run on Thursday. His wip preparation is progressing satisfactorily. There promises to be some very warm favourites at the North Taranaki Hunt Club meeting. Dr. Shimose appears to have plenty of weight and most punters would prefer Rohapotac at the weights.
For a mare that won half-a-dozen races last season Lady Mcnschikoff does not appear to be harshly treated with 7st. in the big hand'eap at Marton. The locally trained We? Trinket and Waihuka have heon wo king satisfactorily, the former showing really good gallops, but neither will \n muth supported at Marton. Waihuka is too much raced, the man in the sl-tct says, and Wee Trinket on the track r-nd o-. trie course arc two very different animals
Overtime puts up a "lbs. penalty in the Shorts Handicap Mr. F. Faber's hors'e will carry Tat. 1 libs.
Only a small )' :'..l is likely to contest the open hurlle race at Marton. Of tie acceptors, Wiiral and Erl King are engaged in tY> ': rial Hurdles earlier in the dav.
Aberbrothock is said to be a greatly improved horse, cud being well up to heavy loads, slio ill fcore a few wins in the spring. From the Xev; '/.• :i 1 and Cup to an open hack hnndk'm at the Hunt Club meeting is a big Irip. but such are two standing engagements of the black Rohepotae. A cable message from Sydney yesterday stated that Provocation arrived from Wc]lii,r;toii in good condition.
While being schooled on the Wanganui course on Saturday morning. Clarabcfc fell at the hen-'coop ad 'broke her neck. Commonwealth, Timothy, Highden, Rohepotae, Cavalry, Uliland'o, Wee Trinket and St. Kildare figure amongst the Wanganui spring meeting nominations.
AH Red. North-East, Sir Frisco, Broailswor'tb and Roosevelt are the best of a .poor crowd engaged in the principal handicaps for Wangaiui. The Wellington Metropolitan Committee having confirmed the Woodlands Hunt Club's disqualification of Otus, that horse will not be eligible to start aji Marton to-day. Sid. Rcid's disqualification has been removed, as from October Ist, and it is quite certain that that well-known jockey will not again take such a. risk as he did with Consolation at the Wellington summer meeting. 'Mr. Ulic Shannon will declare his weigMs for the Wanganui spring meeting (in or about Saturday, Septemoer 4 th. Acceptances for all events at the North Tannin lei Hunt Club meeting close with the lion, sec., Mr. A. L. Humphries, on Saturday night.
