TARANAKI LAND BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Taranaki Land Board was held on Tuesday. Present: Commissioner of Crown Lands, Messrs Ileslop, Rattcnbury, Counett.and JleCluggage.

Transfers were dealt with as follows: C. Weston to T. M. Higgle, sections i and 5, block 0, Upper Waitara; W. R, llo.uier to A. C. Nelson, section 37, block lli, Kgmont; T. W. Ireland to W. J. i'rolliit, section 1, block 2, Mahoe; J. (Jleeson to I{. 11. il'igott, sections 11 -and 13, block 8, Waitara; A. llosen-1 feldt to A. llosenfeldt ami G. XI. Mo'petli, section 9, block 13, Oliura. it was resolved to refer the applications to the Minister of Lands. In reference to the application of J. Gleeson, the attention of the transferee will be drawn to the residence required. The following sulj-leases will also be referred to the Minister:—W. I l '. L. Jenkins to Win. Uusiiig, section 31. block 11, Xgit ire; C. X. .Green to J. 11. Barber, section 12, block 12, liuiroa; (1. Manji to 11. 11. Rogers and 11. J. McFarlane, section 15, block 12, Huiroa.

It was decided that the application of T. J. Pendrav for a sub-lease to R. McKcown, part section 2, block 3. Oliura, could not be dealt with until the lease is issued.

W. li. Davies applied for consent lo grant of timber and tramway rights to Messrs W. B. Davit*, mid Co. over sections 1, 2 and .1, block 5, Kginont. The application of Messrs J. S. and M. Smith to sub-divide sections 10 ■id 11, block 15, Ngatimaru, and ob:n separate leases was approved, "lie following improved farm settlers a|»l'.iea for their leases to issue:—J. P. Kenny, section 19, block 1, Aria; J. P. Flctt, section 25, block 15, Aria; G. J. Carlvon, section 17, block 9, Olnirs; G. l'arkes, section l(i, block 1, Ar'a; J. Johnston, section 18, block. 9, Totoro; T. Taylor, section 15, block 15, Aria. The leases will bo issued according y. The applications of .1. J. Peacock, with respect to section 4, block 16, Aria, and F. Kearns were left with the Commissioner.

After hearing G. C. Wilson's explaiation for non-residcncc on section 4, block 10, Pouatu, it was resolved that six months' extension of time in which to reside or effect a transfer be granted. J. V. Shield applied for compensation for loss of grazing on section 27, block 8, Ngaire. It .was resolved that the Board could not see 'its way to graut the request. Par&'ons to purchase part of Cliftoa road adjoining j section 18, Pukearuhe district, closed hy tiie Provincial Council, was referred t© the iC'liftqn County Council. D. B. Fergusson wrote asking for information as to disposal of section 5, block 10, Opaku, and the. valuations thereon. Mr. Ferguson waited on the Board in the niatlor. He stated that although he considered the valuation for improvements was low for the actual cost, still he would not object to the valuation for the chance of a sale being effected, lie asked for, the unimproved value to be reduced. After fully considering , the matter the Board agrted that having, as requested, appointed an independent valuer, it sees no reason to make a further recommendation. R. Schmidt wrote that he de6ired to forfeit Action 1, block 10, Mahoe, as it was too rough. It was resolved that the section be declared forfeited. Consideration of a letter from 0. L. Frank with reference to ' letting the grazing on section 7a, block 1, Pouatu, was deferred until, next meeting. , R. A. Herbertson appealed against the forfeiture of sections: 9 and 12, 1 block 12, Opaku. He waited on tlu Board and explained that he was unable to fell the bush in the proper season, but'that he had made a start with the improvements as required by the Board, It was resolved that the forfeiture b 1 rescinded and that six months' extension he allowed in which to bring ini« provements np to date. Messrs McDonald and Rule applied to subdivide section 1, hU.ck IG, Ohura, and submitted a sketch plan of the proposed subdivision.—lt was resolved that upon a proper survey plan being lodged and approved the application be referred to the Minister of Lands.

The Taranaki Education Board applied for a sub-lease of part section 102, block 10, Pouatu.—This application will also be referred to the Minister. A. G. Crawford asked that sections in '1 Mgaporutu village at present leased ■I. O. llf'Koy be offered to public coalition. T. Twiss reported on the inspection ol 34 holdings, comprising an area of 0907 acres. The value of improvements required by thp Act was £fi4(il, and the value of the improvements effected was £IO,OIO. No selector® were in default. —The Hoard considered the report very satisfactory.

The Board was advised that the matter of placing C. A. Kkiuuer in possession of aeiiion 3U and 44, block 4, Paritutn. Spotswuod Settlement, at present occupied by J. Griffin, was one for the Board to deal \vit'll. Mr. Skinner ( waited on the Board and asked if he could transfer his application to section 87 provided lie could obtain a reduction of rent. He was informed that if the rent were reduced the land must be offered to the public. He wa6 also informed that ::i the event of the present tenant giving up possession he would be granted a temporary tenancy on the same conditions. The Commissioner was authorised to return Mr. Skinner's deposit with application for sections '3B and 44 upo.i the withdrawal-.of same. It was resolved that should be granted to Mr. E. Meredith to cut and remove timber from the portion ol' Mangaroa township in such locality as may be approved by the Commissioner upon payment of royalty at Hie rale ol 9d per 100 ft for kahikatea and Is |,er 100 superliciul feet for all other milling timber.

The re-valuations of Spotswood Settlement were dealt with in committee. The following selectors in default were <lealt with:—T. BraSh, section JU, block b, Egmont (deficiency improvements).—Mr. Brash waited on the Board and it was resolved to grant a final extension of six months*' to bring the improvements up to date. C. R. MeCart'e, section 8, block 6, Pouatu (norebideuce).— Deferred to next meeting. A. E. J5. Belcher, section 5, block 10, Upp«iT Waitara (non-resiilencc).—Resolved that six months be granted iu which to reside or transfer. McK.enzie and Hills, section 8, block 15, Upper Waitara (non-im-provements)— Forfeited. L. M. Natz'co, section 6, block 3, ilahoe (deficient im provements).—lie waited on the Board and claimed that the value of improvements should be more.—His explanation was considered satisfactory. J,. 31. Gohlup, section 3, block 5, and section 10, block 0, Pouatu (deficient improvement*')— Resolved to draw attention to non-completion of improvements.
