The Regulus (Westport Coal Co.s collier) arrived here at 6 o'clock !&3t evening with a cargo of coal and coke, from Westport. Di.scharging operations will be proceeded with this morning. TIIE RIMU.

The liimu did not get out of Onehunga as expected on Tuesday, but. was expected to get out yesterday morning. No advice, however, has been received to this' effect. Tile vessel is not expected to call at Xew Plymouth now that tile Northern Company.lias made' arlangements for the Rarawa to take away from here any .passengers or cargo i<iat may be offering, for transhipment to the at Onehunga for KaB'hia, and vice versa. The trade offc--mg does not warrant the Ilimu making New Plymouth a port of call. Direct communication with Kawliia will no* be unavailable. It is to be hoped this will only be temporary, and that sufficient trade will be created between the two ports to make a direct service a paying one.

.THE FOURTH PORT IN THE EMPIRE. Sidney now ranks as the fourth largest port of the British Empire, says' the Sydney Sunday Sun. Its wealth of shipping has become so great that, although it is in a remote part of the globe, as far as the great ocean, highways arc concerned, it stands out prominently in the world of commerce. .Most interesting figures showing the immensity of Sydney's -shipping trade reveal the fact that 21*28 vessels of tonnage of 4,409,021 tons entered the Heads during 1008, While 1502 vessels of 3,042,703 tons ieft the port in the same period. The I'ormer carried 120,330 men. and the iatut 112,347. Of this great fleet, 1738 sh> .;rrived from ports of the British J'.iiipiri' over the seas, and 1338 departed' therefor. The arrivals' from forei-™ countries were 390, and the departures 254. It must not be forgotten, either, that the majority of the many thousands of sailors visiting Sydney spend a considerable portion of their "earnings in the city. Last year 3720 vessels of a total tonnage of 8,051,814 tons passed ; i and out of tlm port, and of these », fewer than 342!) were steam, and but 1!)! sail. Ten years ago the proportion '. shipping was little more than ha. ' what it is to-day. TheTe are only abt»... 700 more vessels visiting .Sydney annua 1 - ly (there having been 3073 of 4,500,524 tons in 1800), iiut the tonnage of vessels has increased with great rapidity, modern steamships ousting the sailers.'

The bars of the West Coast (South Island) ports are at present greatlv interfered with by the heavv seas. Three vessels were baitatnd at (ireymouth oil Monday, and one vessel was unable to enter Westport the same day.
