Eastern files contain information that the Governor of the Straits Settlements has assumed the administration of 15.000 square miles in the Malay Peninsula ceded to Britain under the recent AngloSiamese treaty.
Bie concession makes possible railway communication between Singapore and Bangkok, and the linking up of the railways of southern Burma and tiin Malay States. When this is done the whole system will traverse British ter ritory or through a British sphere wf influence in Siam. v
Strategically the acquisition prevents ■any foreign Power from acquiring a base for cutting British communication tu the East, anil practically closes the Straits of Malacca,
