RAILWAY APPEALS
THE MINISTER'S VETO. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Asked by a New Zenland Times representative why he had exercised his veto in the railway appeal cases, the Hon. J. A. Millar, Minister of Railways, said: "It is the biggest certainty on earth that we cannot hand the sole control over to the Appeal Boards. The «to has been exercised In the public in- | tcrest." Referring to the decision of the North Island Appeal Board, which w as vetoed, with the consequent resignation 'of Mr. W. A. Veitch, president of the A.S.R.S., from the Board, Mr. Millar said appellant, a driver, was dismissed for deliberately fouling the main line, contrary to rule, and jeopardising the lives of passengers in the mail train. The Board recommended he should be reinstated as/ a fireman. In due course he would have claimed pro- , motion as a driver again. He (the Minister) was not going to take the responsibility and jeopardise life in that way.
