Received 10, 11.0 p.m. London, July II). There were over 100,000 spectators at Southend to see the licet. The street pier was almost impassable. The crowds on the Victoria Embankment to see the submarines and torpedoes recalled the coronation proceedings. Thousands were present who had never seen a battleship. The steamers viewing the fleet were packed with excursionists. Bluejackets acted as guides to the public inspecting the warships. Cutters were used to convey them to and from the shore.
The sailors and marines attended special church parades ashore in the morning. The smaller towns on the riverside are arranging entertainments on a generous scale.
