DISTRICT NEWS

TONGAPORUTU. (From Our Own Corespondent.) The s.s. Pitoitoi arrived oil' the bit.'' here on Sunday, about one hour after high water. She crossed the liar all right, but after getting into the channel at the. lower reaches of the river she commenced to touch the bottom, ultimately grounding on a small spit. An attempt to get her off, after lightening her a little, failed. At the next tide, however, she floated off and came up to the wharf. The tides have been very low here for the past week. Tiie road at the foot of Mount Messenger, which is in a very had state, is living put in order. Facincs arc being put down with sandstone on top, so la a few days this bad bit of road should he in good order. I think, Piowover, that if four chains were done it would be much better. A large slip that came down half-way up from the south side of Mount Messenger is giving a lot of "trouble. Some two or three men have to be kept here to keep the road open. The whole ot the road from the foot of Mount Messenger on the south side to the bottom 071 the north is worse now than ever it was (excepting, of course, that portion that has been metalled). Them are portions of the road that are dangerous on a wet day, as the slope is outwards and there is danger of vehicles skidding over the side. Something should be done to these places, and that at once.

Pilfering from men's camps is a frequent occurrence here, and I hope the first person caught stealing things out of tents will lie made an example of. Such mean thieves should be severely dealt with. A trap has been set. The Pitoitoi left again for Awakino at noon to-day (Tuesday).
