DEATH OF AN INFANT

Woodville, Last Night The Magistrate's Court was occupied tile whole of to-day in hearing a charge of alleged murder of a newiy-norn uiiay against Alice Maud Shepherd, domestic servant, living at Mangatoro, near Dannevirke, and John (.'line, roadman foil Dannevirke County. It will ho remembered that the body of a newlyborn baby was found in a bag in Woodville town sewer early in the month, and.n' string was tied tightly round the neck of the child. Two doctors testified that the child had lived and had met its death by strangulation. Woodville witnesses identified the bag and wrappings in which the body was found as having been purchased by male accused; and other witnesses to their having stayed in Woodville together last month. Detective Butler testified to the arrest of accused, and a confession by the female accused to the effect that she had tied a string around the child's neck. This evidence wns corroborated by Sergeant Cruickshank. Accused reserved their defence, and were committed for timl at the Supreme Court at Napier next week.
