THE WELLINGTON COMPANY AND THE MTJNICIPALTIY. DEPUTATION TO THE PREMIER.

A deputation, comprising the Mayor and several city councillors), wafted on the Prime Minister this aiternoon in reference to the recent legislation permitting the Wellington Gas Company to take its mains through, the streets of Wellington. The Mayor explained there was a< proviso that the Act could only be put into operation by an Order-in-ConftcH. The right of the Gas Co. to> operate in the streets of Wellington lor all time and shift everything th;it 'Came in its road, was a violation of the rights-of local government. The deputation urged that the Government should not grant the company's request for an Order-in-Council. The corporation was negotiating for the purchase oi its worlcs and if the Council bought out the company there would be no need for the present agitation, but if (the ragotfatiote failed?, the Council wanted to see that tie Order-in-Councit was not granted ia a certain part of the district. The: City Council had a right to start gasworks of its own. Therefore those rights should not be granted to anybody, else. ' Sir Joseph 1 Warff said the representations of the 'deputation, wuld have "the fullest consideration. The Government had i not agreed to have the Order-in-Council executed. He believed in muni-eipafly-owned gasworks. He understood negotiations were gomg' on for the purchase; by the Council, but he thought finality should have been reached before now. This matter shouK! not be delayed, Jndeffotiely on the assumption that the Order-in-Council would not be put into operation. ' The Mayor said the Council and company were in most active negotiation.
