BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of tl.c Borough Council was held last evening m the Council Chambers,' the Mayor, Mr. G. Tisch. presiding. There were also present:' Crs. Dockrill, ISeilringcr, West, Watkins, Bishop, Hooker, Gilbert, and Browne.
An extension of time was granted Newton King, on the application uf
Mr. King's niaii-.iger (Mr Stanley Shaw)
in which to demolish the temporary building erected on Km,van l'oli. An amendment that uri extension be granted was not carried.
An application was received from Mr. U S. P. Spencer asking that tlie wat-.-r----tables be cleaned aud some metal placed on tlie Mill road, and offering to contribute .tl towards the cost.—Referred to the Works Committee. KLKCTRICAL HNGINEKU'S REPORT.
The electrical engineer reported:--.I Powerhouse—With longer nights the loud is steadily increasing. Two generators serve [or ordinary running, but on Saturday nights the three sets .ire now run. The maximum recorded loss' is 154 kilowatts; total capacity of plant 180-k.w. With existing conditions no over-load Can be looked for. Judging from the progress made sinc c the supply was commenced in January, 11)00 (three yenrs and four months) the machines we have should be capabie of taking the load for the coming winter, but another set will be required fo r the following year., Since th e commencement of the supply we have been particularly fortunate in not having any failure in supply due to want of machinery in case of accident, but it is not safe to be running every machine with no reserve in ease of accident. It is desirable that the next set should be equal in capacity to the whole of the existing plant. I would advise that a 200-k.w. set be illstalled, and if it is to be ready for the winter of 1910, no tim e should be lost in placing the order. A new pipe line will also be required. A 3liin diameter line would serve for the above set at the lower end,'and say OOin at the top. A line of this size would serve for a second 200-k.w. set. The tunnel will serve for present requirements, while a weir at the intake should give sufficient head for a full load for the above extension. While the pipe line is required before the new set can be utilised, I would advise that the new generator and turbine ,be ordered and installed as early as possible, and tlie tail rac e constructed in readiness ior the pipe connections. Three months should be allowed for tenders and not less than nine for delivery.—Referred to the Electric Light Committee. | ENGINEER'S REPORT. t The engineer, -Mr. A. 11. Kendall, VPported on work done, and on having | dispensed with several laborers. He added: "A number of men have been kept busy cleaning up several streets. I need hardly point out that if your Council cannot see its way to do any considerable amount of kerbing and channelling during the coming year a good deal of the expense now involved in this continual and largely temporary expedient of cleaning and scraping footpaths aud gutters' can lie saved by the construction of kerbing only, which improves the appearance of the streets and keeps the footpaths' in proper alignment and shape till such time as the more simple construction of channelling can be undertaken, or in some few places the construction may become, or is, evidently necessary by reason of steep gutters.
The report was' adopted. WORKS COMMITTEE.
The Works Committee reported— That Mr. Spencer be informed, that the Council ennnot see its wnv to reduce tli ( > charge of CI 10s against the County Council for the use of the tiir boiler and roller, the charge having been arrnnged with the county engineer at the time; that the Council join the New Plymouth Employers' Association, at an annual subscription of £1 Is; that the question of making a contribution towards th e costs paid by Mr. Andrews re Leach street deviation be referred to his Worship the Mayor to deal with; that upon tlie Xpw Plymouth Firewood and Carrying Company, Ltd., complying with the usual conditions and paying the cost of the work, the bor> ough engineer be authorised to construct a standpipc at Vogeltown to supply water to their traction engines, estimated at 100 gallons pur day, the charge to be 10s per month; that the question of remedying the block in the drain under Gaine street from section 202 he referred to the borough engineer to deal with; that tli c borough engineer lie authorised to purchase 25 sacks of oats as' per sample selected bv the Works' Committee.
