THE ROLAND CLUB.
A meeting of the above club was held last evening in tlie club rooms, Mr, J. Bennett presided and there was a large attendance, Mr. J. O'Hagun, who held the position of, secretary of t)lc cli(b for some time, had resigned, owing to his leaving the town, and Jfr. W. E. Jones was unanimously elected to fill th e jiositioii of secretary. It was decided to hold a scries 01 socials throughout the winter to advance the financial position of the club. Tlie framing of a syl-' labus was discussed, and it was agreed that the literary and debating side l of the club be taken in hand without delay. With a view to this the first debate will be held on Friday next, 14th inst., 111160 th e navy question will be the debate. This is to .be followed each Friday by oratorical competitions and debates. There ar e two gold medals on hand, donated by the Mayor (Mr. 'fiscli) and Mr. M. Jones, for competition. After tl|o transaction pf rpptine business the meeting adjouraed until Tuesday night.
