WHANGAMOMONA COUNTY COUNCIL

Th e ordinary monthly meeting of the Whangainoniona County Council was heid at Whangainoniona on Wednesday last. There were present: Crs. AlcCui'chan (chairman), E. li. Robertson, It. McCluggugo, J. A|. Jones, 'I. Mcllrm, and A. Meredith. 111,, engineer's report was read and adopted. SURFACEMEN. The question ol the appointment of surfacemen for the central and Taliura ridings was considered in committee, and on resuming it was reported that the matter be left in the hand,, of the engineer, with power to act.

WHANGAMOMONA FOOTPATHS. Cr. McClnggnge moved »ml Cr. Mcllroy seconded, that if any balance remains of the .tMO voted for Whniigaiiioinoiiß township improvements, after the necessary lilliiig and drainage is completed, thai the toolpath be spread with burnt papa "seconds," the engineer to use his discretion as to the conduct of the work. -Carried. CORRESPONDENCE.

Correspondence wa.s received as follows:—■

From C. S. Gatton, asking for permission to obtain sand from the road and offering to pay royalty for same.—Cr. Jones stated that he had given the required permission.—lt was resolved that Cr. Jones' action in allowing Mr. Gatton to take sand from the Biewer-Ta-hora road be confirmed.

The Makahu Dairy Co, wrote asking ior a few yards of metal fo r the approaches to the factory.—Resolved, on the motion of Crs. Jones and McCutclieoii Hut the request of the Makahu Dairy Co. for six or eight yards of metal be acceded to.

The Treasury wrote n; the additional 10 per cent, on the Eoliuratahi road loan.—Cr. McCutehan moved, and Cr. McCluggage seconded, that a special order making a special rate for the payment of interest and other charges on the ten per cent, ailditi il on the Kohuralnlii road loan of JJ9OO, be now instituted—Carried. Letters from Mr. .1. B. lliue, M.P. re subsidy on :C3BOO loan; from the Prime Minister, re visit to Wlianganiomoua; from the Minister for Labor, re statutory half-holiday; and from Mrs. 11. ilninieson, re stock grazing in the pound,

Mr. Klee wrote requesting certain improvements to his road frontage, and on the motion 01 Cr. McCutehan and Cr. .Meredith, it was resolved that Mr. Kle e be informed that the mailers referred to are already in the hands of the engineer.

Th c Stmlford llespilal Board wrote re the Council's contribution to its fund. —lt was decided, on the motion of Crs. McCluggage anil Jones, that the monthly contributions due by the Whangamoiiiouu Courty Council, in terms of the Board's letter, bo paid during the ensuing year.

Mr. J. McCluggagc wailed on the Council on behalf of several settlers of the Whangamomona road, and asked that the cutting near the cemetery he. put in order, the loan money to be anticipated to this extent.—Cr. AleCluggagc moved, and Cr. Meredith seconded, that the wishes of the settlers as outlined by Mr. J. McCluggagc lie acceded to. the expenditure to l>c met out of rates, and to be limited to £lfi.—Carried.

The Treasury and department of Roads wrote re' subsidy on the £3BOO loan, mid it was decided that the engineer be authorised to draft a letter to the Chief TlOads Engineer, explaining the expenditure proposed on the various roads included h the loan. GENERAL.

Air .1. Dromgool was granted a slaughtering license, subject to the ui-ual conditions being complied with. The mailer of repairs to the Favler road was left in the hands of th 0 engineer, with power to act. The engineer was instructed In report on the probable cost of forming the. Afaiigarewa road a few chains from its junction with the Mangaehu road. TIIK LATIO JIfXISTKRTAIi VfSIT. The chairman reported to the Council that he had signed an address of welcome to the hon. the Alinistcr for Roads, on the occasion of his recent, visit, and asked for an expression of the Council's opinion as to his action. —It was resolved, on the motions of Crs. Afcllroy and McCluggagc, that the chairman's action in signing the address of welcome be approved.—The chairman expressed his gratification at the Council's endorsement of his action. Cr. .loncs stated that it might be desirable fo r the Council to explain the circumstances of the recent Ministerial visit, as a good deal of irresponsible talk had been circulating about it.

It was resolved, on the'motion of Crs. Meredith' and MeCluggage. that Hi" Wliaiigamoinoiia County Council expresses itis regret and disapprovnl that certain statements should have been nia.le'to the effect that the said Council was responsible fo r the conveyance to, and entertainment of, the Minister for Koads. at Wliaiigainomona. such not being the case, the Council paying none of the expense of such visit and having no part in the reception of the Minister. MAXCAUE KOAD THUDCE. A deputation from the Mangare mad waited on the Council re the immediate construction of the bridge out of the loan money, and also the desirability of rounding up and generally repairing the road ior a length of about 12 chains.— On the motion of Cr. MoCutchaii, seconded by Cr. McTlroy. it was decided that (he work of bridge building anil road formation on the Mangare road, to the extent of £250, as requested by the deputation from the road, be .put in liainl immediately upon the receipt of an unanimous petition of the ratepayers in tlie loan area to that efl'vcl.
