THE ADDINGTON INQUIRY.
By Telegraph.— Press Associatien. ChiisU-hiireh, Murch 15. The Addington inquiry was largely devoted this morning to a discussion on the capacity of the various machines. Mr. Henderson, foreman in the boiler shops, deposed that it was not a fact that the men were allowed to speak to their foreman at Addington in a manner which would not be tolerated in a private shop. Others deposed that discipline was good and the plant efficient. Chriatcliureh, Last Night. At the Addington workshops' enquiry Henderson, formerly in the boiler shop, Hiiid the heaviest plates Tollable at Addington were tluise three-quarters of an XM'h thick. Two shell plates of this ■thickness and 15ft by Oft 2in could be wiled in four hours and a-quarter. They icould put in 500 %in rivets a day. J. S. Clark, foreman fitter, said he had been in all the large shopß in the Dominion, and the discipiline at Addington was as good as any ho had ibeen in.
■ i W. 11. Cole, foreman blacksmith, said (the staff of smiths was the finest in ■ New Zealand. There was also a good staff in the forge department. ,Tolm Harbour, moulding shop foreman, said the plant at Addington was as good as in any of the jobbing shops he, had worked in. The workshop practice at Aldington, was far superior to many American shops. Robert D. Mcßwan, a turner, ststed tltat the incii! in the Clyde works (Scotland) worked harder than those at Ad- ■ diiigtoai. This was due entirely to the f bonus system. George Butt, foreman fitter, and Dao--1 id Joseph Brown also gave evidence of a the good work done at Addington. f George Edward Richardson, workr shops manager at Addington, said he ' issued two permits last November to , the Hon. Mr. .Tenkiirson, who had mot t spoken to Mm regarding either visit. 1 Witness had not seen idling ob a gener- • al thing at Addington. A new shop 1 should be, erected for the construction - of new locomotives. s , The enquiry was adjourned till tof morrow.
