Mr. (ieorge Stokes was one of the pair, and just as he had started for the shore lie heard n call from the young lcuim ■> near him. Not catching what was said, and deeming it of little importance, he swum still further shoreward, when lie heard another cry, and, looking round, saw his companion disappear. He was prickly on the spot, and, grabbing tins nan from behind, managed to bring him ;o laud, but not without considerable lill'iculty. Ail indill'crent swimmer would linve had hard work to reach shore alone, and only a powerful man like Mr. Stokes could have effected the rescue. Wine of the others of the party knew of the incident at the time, so he had to battle on unaided. But for his timely assistance nothing could have saved the man, who, upon recovering, acknowledged this. Mr. Ii W. Tnnes, of Awatuna, East, met with a rather bad accident when shooting at some' birdß on Friday last, lie had loaded his gun and was just in the act of firing when, the cartridge exploded, and, flying backward, hit him on the cheek, inflicting nasty wounds and disfiguring his face in a way which showed the severity o't the blow he received and what a narrow shave he had had. The,gun was an old one, and the barrel was a good deal worn, and it is to this fact that the explosion is attribute*].
