NGAURUHOE QUIETENING.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland. Last Night. Messrs. E. Deslerre and (i. Beme, two Auckland pressmen, reached the summit of Xgaiirulioe yesterday evening. The latter part of the ascent was made in a fog. The crater was obscured by steam and fog, lmt occasionally a mon'ientarv 'glimpse was obtained of Hie centre of activity. There was a continual roar from the steam vents on the lloor of the crater, and every now and then showers of stones and sand. Portion of the wall of the crater seemed to be missing, but whether it had actually been blown out, or whether that portion was still there and concealed by billows of steam, it was impossible to say. Xo lava streams were seen. On comparison with the activity noted during the past four days it is evident the volcano is quietening.
