I Mr. T. AL Wilford, M.P., has decided to contest the Wellington Mayoralty. Mr. T. Philpotts, Clerk of the Court, Elthain, has received notice of transfer to ltotorua. E. E. Booth, of the " All Black " team which went Home in 1000, is reported to be playing well for Leicester. Sir. Hunter Lennox, home missionary at Kaponga, was ordained to the oldership at the meeting of the Taranaki Presbytery at llawera on Thursday. Archdeacon Cole passed through Xew Plymouth on Saturday en route to Inglewood, where he instituted the Kev. V. Carew Thomas as Vicar of lnglewood yesterday. Mr G. F. Gee, manager of the National Bank at Wellington for the past 15 years, is retiring and intends to reside in England. Mr J. G. Stott is to succeed him as local manager. Mr. l'\ Kule, Presbyterian home missionary at Patea, has resigned his office in order to take up an important appointment at Ohristchurch in connection with social service work. Mr. S. J. Jackson, custodian of the .Maori Hostelry at New Plymouth for some time past, has resigned the charge, asid will commence business here on his own account as a. native agent and interpreter.
Archdeacon Walsh, who has painted all the hatchments on the walls of St. Mary's Church, New Plymouth, will be present at the unveiling of the remaining three hatchments on the afternoon ot .Sunday, 28th March, and will give the address. The Bishop of Auckland will perform the ceremony of unveiling the hatchments.
Judge Rcid, the newly appointed judge of the Native Land Court, died ut Ttiupo last week. Deceased, who was appointed judge some eight months ago, had been in ill-health for some time past. He was a native of Auckland, and at one time a prominent athlete in the northern city. Deceased, nlio was about 38 years of age, leaves a widow and two children.
The body of the late William McGonigle, the railway porter who died at Palmerston North on Tuesday night as the result of injuries received by a fill from a train, was brought to 'llawera last week for interment in. llawera Cemetery. Deceased, who had been in the service for 23 years, leaves a widow and one mairied son, Mr W. ,f. MeGonigle, signalman at Stratford. The deceased was well known throughout Tarauaki.
There are many in Hawera who will learn with regret that Mr D. Banks, Clerk of the Magistrate's Court, has resigned his position in order to commence the practice of the law at Hastings,' says the Star. The department has accepted the resignation as from April 30, and Mr Banks lias been granted leave of absence for one month. Mr Banks has been in the service for 15 years, having joined the Department of Justice at Palmerston North in 1894.
A very pretty and quiet wedding was solemnised at St. Mary's Church o"i Saturday morning, when' Mr. Peter Claude Gordon Hoslrin, of New Plymouth, was married to Miss Grace Remnant-Grooby. of Motueka. The bride, who was given away by. Mr. Norman F, Clarke, a broth-er-iu-law of tile bridegroom, was attired in a very pretty cream serge dress with satin and silk insertion trimmings, aiid white felt hat trimmed with white silk and ostrich plume. She was accompanied by Miss Olive lioskin as bridesmaid. Mr. Louis L. Gray acted as best man. After the ceremony a reception was held ut the residence 01 the bridegroom's parents, where the usual toasts were honoroil. !A largo number of handsome and costly presents were received. Mr. 11. ]). One of the cases is that of the Commissioner of Stamps (appellant) v. Mrs, Townsend, of Christchurcli (respondent), and the question at issue relates to the amount of duty payable in respect of Die estate of the late G. 11. Moore, station-holder, Canterbury. Mr. Hell will represent the appellant in this case. The question involved in the other case, Hamilton Gas Company (appellants) v. Corporation of Hamilton (respondents), is the amount payable by respondents for (he works which they have acquired from appellants. In this case Mr. Pell will appear on behalf of respondents. Mr. Bell will also represent Victoria College at the Darwin Centenary
