CRUEL TREATMENT OF A CHILD. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Whangarei, February-22. At the Police Court Arthur Edward Sell and Marguerita Sell were charged with committing an aggravated assault on a child named Allen Roger Tait, the 3 years and 4 months old son of the female defendant. The child was one fearful mass of bruises from head to foot. The doctor said the child had been beaten in a most cruel, disgraceful manner, and could 1 not have stood it much longer. In giving judgment the Bench said the perpetrators should he flogged till they were black and blue, but lje did not want to send a young couple to gaol. Each was fined £5 or three months imprisonment.
A SOLICITOR SUSPENDED. Wellington, February 22. A motion to make absolute a rule nisi, striking 0. K. Harden, solicitor, Palmerston North, oft* tire rolls, was brought before Judge Cooper by the District Law Society to-day. Tlie ground of the motion was an alleged misappropriation of .C 250 of his clients' moneys. Harden was charged with misappropria lion last September and acquitted,. It was now decided to leave the matter over for the Court of Appeal, but Mr. Justice Cooper directed that in the meantime Harden should be suspended from practice.
BOOKMAKERS FIXED. Wellington, February 22. Karo Slelin and Robert Davidson, bookmakers, Verc to-day each fined £2 10s and costs for inserting an advertisement in Truth, contrary to the provisions of tlie Gaining Act.
