MR MASSEY'S STATEMENTS.
CONTRADICTED BY THE PREMIER. Zy Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, February 22. The Premier, in the course of an interview, said that the statements made at Hawcra by Mr. Massey to the effect) that the Government has heea guilty of improper tactics in the sole interests of the Party and of bribery of expenditure and the promising of billets, etc., for reward! for party services were absolutely contrary to fact. He challenged Mr. Massey to name any specjlic case. '■ In regard to Mr. MeGowan's retirement, Sir Joseph Ward said that there [ was not the slightest difference of I opinion on the questions of policy between Mr. McGowan and himself; further, the suggestion that Mr. McGowan had declined to retire was without t'no slightest foundation. 1m regard to Mr. Ngata's appointment, Sir Joseph Ward said the responsible Minister was not relievcd of his obligations. The UnderSecretary could act in many matters though not where Ministerial responsibility was called for.
