POHOivUISA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) llv. Dixon and staff are busily engaged surveying the railway route between the l'ohokura and Wliangauuiinona Saddles, getting in the level pegs, ele. It is anu-ipaud that the railway will be at I'ohoMu'a in about It) mouths' time. It will be a great boon to the settlers, enabling them, as it will, to get in their stores and get out their produce more expeditiously. the local settlers are all going in for sheep farming, which the country is well adapted for. .Messrs Xcwing and llickford have had very good clips this year, Mr. Xcwing having about 30 bales 'of wool and Mr. llickford about 22. The country around acre is looking very well. 1 consider the river Hats are worth Jl'2o per acre. Some of the finest gardens are to be seen on the Hats. Mr. Applcgurth, draughtsman for the railway survey, is giving free lessons on ambulance work and lirst aiad, which we all appreciate. Several farms have changed hands lately, Mrs. Deem, Mr. Shcppard and Messrs. Speck JJros. having sold their farms at advanced prices. We have had very showery weather since Christmas, which has affected shearing a good deal, besides other work. We are appointing Mrs. 1!. Campbell as head teacher for the l'ohokura School, anil with the new families coming in, I think she will have a fair attendance of children.
WAREA. At a meeting on Saturday evening it was decided to give a farewell to Mr. Victor Hobinson, who is leaving for the Old Country on about February 28tli. The following committee was formed to make arrangement: —Messrs J. Murgess, W. MeUchlan, 11. Pelham and C. 11. King. The annual general meeting of the Warea Athletic Club was held on Saturday night. There was a large numuer present. Mr. W. MeLaclilan was elected to the chair. The balance-sheet was read and adopted, and proved very sutisfaetorv. The total receipts nmounted to CB:i'l2s tid and the expenditure ;C52 IDs. leaving a credit balance of £3O 12s. A vote of thanks was passed to the /secretary. .MY. B. The prize money has been doubled. The Axemen's Cup Chop was fixed at Xa lirst and .CI second, as compared with Ci last year. It was decided not to give second prizes unless there are four starters. A farewell social will be tendered Miss Larking on Thursday, 28th inst.
